Background Part 1 - The Mango Tree Indian Coastal Restaurant at I12 Katong

"If it's a restaurant good enough for the President of Singapore, it MUST be good enough for me!!" - This must be the thought that resonates through every diners' mind as they stepped into The Mango Tree Indian Coastal Restaurant at I12 Katong.

Lining the walls on the right as you step into the restaurant are several framed photos of Restaurateur Chin Choon Kean, commonly known as CK with none other than the former President of Singapore, Mr S R Nathan.

You see, the daughter of Mr S R Nathan frequents The Mango Tree as she simply adores the Indian Cuisine served here. She has shared her love for this restaurant with her father Mr S R Nathan, who enjoys tucking into the Kerala Fish Curry here - his favourite dish.
CK is an accidental Restaurateur. His background was from the Civil Engineering Industry, as he is a trained Civil Engineer, having working in several construction companies for more than 10 years. None of his family members are in the F&B industry, not even his parents, nor siblings.

The story goes that one day CK passed by one of
the empty units along East Coast stretch of food establishments, and approach the landlord to express his interest in setting up a restaurant. It so happen there sits right in front of the restaurant a Mango Tree which at that time did not bear fruit.

CK was advised by the contractor to cut down the tree, but CK insists on keeping it. After establishing that it was a Mango Tree, he named the restaurant after it. And because he planned to serve Northern, Southern, Coastal Cuisine, CK name the restaurant The Mango Tree Indian Coastal Restaurant

CK is married to Reeny Kosman (an Australian - Javanese Eurasian) former model for more than 17 years, and together they have three lovely princesses : 17 year old Raelene, 15 year old Ranette, 14 year old Ranae, whose lovely photos adorn the Welcome Section of www.themangotree.com.sg.

In their search for that perfect dish to present on their menu at The Mango Tree, CK and Reeny scour the various places in India to taste the food and to find the perfect recipe to bring to Singapore.

The Mango Tree started in 2001, and has since been profitable for the past 12 years. To date there are one The Mango Tree in Singapore.
