Heng Ji Chicken Rice stall at People's Park Food Centre

Tender Cantonese Chicken with  broken rice fragrant & thick seasoned with shallots & sesame oil

The Glamorous Mrs Tan ( Mdm Lim ) helming the stall

This Cantonese chicken rice stall is unique as they serve only steam chicken (white) and the rice used is broken rice.  They serve the rice in tiny bowls so small that those times when we eat at this stall we had to order extra rice. The chilli is unique & delicious you could really stir into the rice to eat with.

Mrs Tan ( Mdm Lim ) took to running the stall from her father-in-law who started this business 60 years ago. She is the second generation to helm this chicken rice stall for the past 30 years. She is a Hokkien girl married into a Cantonese family. Though chicken rice is largely operated by the Hainanese, the Cantonese does a mean chicken with their unique blend & method & ingredients.

She is closed on Sundays, you can look for her 3 pm - 9pm daily (except Sunday)

Tow Kwar Pop at Tiong Bahru Market

This Rojak Stall at Tiong Bahru Market called Tow Kwar Pop serves a respectable Rojak. The Hey Gor used is not too fishy and  tastes not too sweet. Unlike traditional Rojaks, the sauces are served separately from the ingredients and the patrons are expected to dip the sliced ingredients into the sauces.

922 Beng Cheng Restaurant Hakka Ampang Yong Tau Foo at 922 Upper Thomson Road

Last night Bob & I paid a visit to the Ampang Yong Tau Foo Stall along Upper Thomson Road. When we first moved to Sembawang from Simei 6 years ago, I used to drive my van & ferry my Mom to this stall along Upper Thomson Road to feast on the delicious Ampang Yong Tau Foo.

The Stall was operated by Mr & Mrs Pang who learnt how to prepare Ampang Yong Tau Foo from a personal friend who came  from Ampang in China. For 40 odd years the Pang family dutifully prepares the ingredients to make the special sauce & Yong Tau Foo.

Then just last year Mrs Pang retired and passed the baton to her son & her daughter who now operates 2 separate stalls along Upper Thomson Road. The one that Bob & I went to last night was operated by the daughter Mdm Pang Nyuk Lin, married to Mr Soh Chiang Ngang. She has been helping out in the family business for more than 30 years and is currently in her 50's though she looks very young, as if  in her 30's.

The Yong Tau Foo comes in different varieties, and is served dry with a special sauce drizzled over the dry ingredients.

The various varieties can be seen below:

Deep fried Fish - ball

Quail's eggs

 Tau Pok

Tau Kee

Bitter Gourd sliced stuffed with minced meat

Deep  fried Wan Ton with minced meat

Lady's Fingers stuffed with fragrant minced meat

Tong Ji Ah Heng Duck Rice Stall at Hong Lim Food Centre (I)

Braised Duck (Whole)

Braised Tau Hoo & Hard Boiled Eggs

Braised Pork Loin

Stall Specialty Chilli

Uncle Yang & his wife used to operate their traditional Dark Soya Sauce Teochew Duck rice stall from Hill Street Food Centre 2nd Floor in the 1980- 90's before the Hill Street Food Centre was demolished. I used to eat at his stall when I was working at Christian Bookstore Ebenezer at Funan Centre from 1988-1990 during my varsity vacation holidays.  Uncle Yang has operated Duck rice stall business for 60 years since he was a teenager.

I remembered very well the special potent chilli sauce that Uncle Yang used to make - it goes perfectly well with the duck & I use to mix it into my white to eat.

After he was evacuated from Hill Street he moved to Tekka Market, but has since left it to set up stall at Hong Lim Food Centre.  Now that I have reunited with this Duck Rice Stall I'd be sure to feast here for as long as I can for Uncle Yang serves out a mean Teochew flavour true to his Teochew roots!
